Introduction to BBCC

The British Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce (BBCC) was set up as a business support group in December 1991, aiming to:
  • Promote, protect and strengthen bi-lateral trade and commerce between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom and between them and the European Community;
  • Promote investment, joint ventures, research and development in both countries;
  • Maintain close ties with traders both in the United Kingdom and in Bangladesh, including the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and relevant government ministries.

BBCC is a not for profit membership organisation which utilises the membership fees and other income to support UK and Non Resident Bangladeshi Businesses across the world. BBCC has a dedicated Board of volunteer Directors and a small team of officers who have worked hard to make BBCC a successful brand in supporting the business community and therefore the wider community. However, there are a wide range of challenges facing BBCC including income generation/ funding, lack of overall business development, low membership and customer base, governance and skills.

The election of a new Chairman, Mr Iqbal Ahmed OBE, and re-election of Director General Abssar M Waess has provided an opportunity to take a fresh look at the future of the organisation in the context of celebrating and building on the achievements of the past. This has meant an overall examination of BBCC’s ‘fitness for purpose’ including an assessment of its business approach to date with a view to developing a future looking business plan which addresses issues of capacity and capability, governance structures human and financial resources. This document represents the newest vision and direction of the BBCC for the period 2010 to 2013. The Strategic Plan renews our commitment to provide an excellent standard of service and programs designed to continuously meet the needs of our members.

The Strategic Plan for BBCC articulates the Strategic Goals for change and business priorities for bringing about that change. This is an adaptive and non-static document subject to amendment. The plan is not designed as a stand-alone document. It is intended to work in conjunction with an annual business action plan. We will continue to reach out to our members in order to learn more about how our programs and services are being received and, how we can maximize our efforts to the full benefit of the membership.

As economic conditions, trends in the business landscape and customer expectations change and ff we are to support the success of businesses across the country, Europe and Bangladesh then our operating environment of BBCC needs to change, along with our focus and direction. During the development of this strategic plan Board Directors and members have consistently indicated that BBCC has done well in some areas but have also suggested that the BBCC could do so much better in the future. Now is seen an opportune time for renewal. The BBCC wants to become the “must join” business association that is clearly differentiated from others. Renewal starts with a compelling Mission and Vision – a definition of future success. The renewed vision for the BBCC is to be the leading business association in the UK, Europe and Bangladesh. By “leading” the way, BBCC will be seen as the primary and vital link between business and all four levels of government. It will be able to influence impact on public policy and decision-making to the benefit of business and the broader community alike.

The key elements of BBCC’s new strategic direction are summarised in the following pages. It is predicated on being a national and international leader on a critical few business issues where our expertise and potentially broad membership base will give it a unique legitimacy. In tandem with that vision, we need to see ourselves as the main destination for networking opportunities for British Bangladeshi professionals and business community. The plan recognises that policy development, advocacy, the member value proposition, the focus and activities of the organisation will be shaped and implemented to achieve these important goals.
